CPP/CSU Scholarships:

  • President's research travel fund. The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR-CPP) will provide scholarships between $100 to $1,000 to both undergraduate and graduate students to travel and to attend professional meetings to make original presentations based on creative or scholarly work. If traveling to a professional conference, the student MUST be presenting his or her research at the meeting. The fund cannot support travel solely for such purposes as performing duties as an officer of a club or participating in activities associated with course work. Students may use these awards to pay for conference registration, travel, parking, lodging, and food while away from their home campus of CPP. Deadline is on April, 15 2016.
  • A great page with many Research Opportunities and Programs . In particular, Geology students in the past have been successful in applying for the Presidential Travel (also grad students!), MacNair Scholarship program, KUSP, FuTURE and SEES apprenticeships.
  • The CPP McNair Scholarship Program helps low-income and first-generation and/or underrepresented students who are interested in preparing for graduate school. McNair scholars will work with a faculty mentor, conduct research, and learn the process of applying to graduate school. Eligibility forms for the program are due 3:30 pm on February 26, 2016.
  • CSU pre-doctoral program: intended to increase the pool of future CSU faculty by providing opportunities and funding for graduate degrees (masters or doctoral). The CSU Chancellor's Office selects students from each CSU campus to be Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholars. The scholars receive up to $3000 for graduate school preparation. The application is available early December and is due to your campus coordinator at 5:00 pm February 26, 2016.
  • Administrative fund: This sponsorship fund is intended to support CPP outreach programs and student development activities including conference attendance, training, and workshops. Funds will be allocated to individual students and officially recognized Cal Poly Pomona clubs/organizations. An individual or group may be funded once per fiscal year. Awards are available up to $1,000. Deadline for Spring (event dates between April 1, 2016 - June 30, 2016) is on April 20, 2016.
  • The PPOHA-MENTORES fellowship program Must be a full-time graduate student each quarter (8 units/quarter) at Cal Poly Pomona with a minimum graduate program GPA of 3.0. Priority will be given to students working toward their Master’s degree; the topic of study should be STEM-related.. The deadline to apply is November 18, 2016.

Geoscience Scholarships:

  • Geological Society of America Grants for graduate students. The deadline for the Graduate Student Research Grants, some of which require a full proposal and budget, is Monday, 1 February 2018, 5:00 PM (MST).
  • SEG Foundation Scholarships encourage the study of geophysics and related geosciences. Online applications are accepted 1 November through 1 March.
  • The Harriet Evelyn Wallace Scholarship was established from a bequest given to AGI by Harriet Evelyn Wallace, who was one of the founding members of the Geoscience Information Society (GSIS). This scholarship is for the support of female graduate students in the United States studying the geosciences. A new scholar is named each year, and every scholar is eligible for up to two years of support. The current annual award is $5,000. The application deadline for the 2017-2018 academic year is on January 4th, 2017. Next nomination cycle deadline to be announced.
  • AEG scholarships. The deadlines are around February 1st. Applications are accepted from graduate and undergraduate students and most scholarships are research or field work related. Any research related to engineering or environmental geology would apply.
  • The Prospective scholars from the National Oceanic an Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is now open for 2017. NOAA's Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship recognizes outstanding students studying in NOAA mission fields. Student scholars receive up to $9,500 per adademic year to support their studies, as well as paid summer internship opportunities at NOAA facilities across the US. Hollings Alumni report that the experience influenced their academic and career paths, expanded their professional networks and improved their skills for working in NOAA mission fields. 100% of Hollings Scholars surveyed would recommend this opportunity to other students. Deadline January 31, 2017
  • Coast Student Travel Awards for undergraduate and graduate students to present the results of original research at marine, estuarine and coastal-themed scientific meetings and conferences, or special thematic sections of more general scientific meetings. Additional information here, online application here, additional Coast International funding opportunities and Departmental Commitment form here. Maximum award $750 for travel within California, and $1000 for travel outside California. Application deadlines: Domestic: No less than 45 days prior to scheduled departure date, OR your internal campus deadline, whichever is greater. International: No less than 75 days prior to scheduled departure date, OR your internal campus deadline for international travel, whichever is greater. US Territories are considered international for this purpose.

  • AGU student travel grants and scholarships Student Travel Grants are available for a limited number of students planning to present at the Fall Meeting. A CPP graduate student received an AGU travel grant in 2013. Deadline for AGU 2015 was August 12, 2015.
  • The 2016 Jack Kleinman Grant is offered to senior undergraduate and graduate students who are conducting research in volcanology, preferably in the Cascade Range, Aleutian volcanic arc, Hawaii, Yellowstone, or the Long Valley caldera. Stipends vary between $500 and $2,000. Application deadline: February 29, 2016.
  • The GSSI student grant for undergraduate or graduate students conducting field geophysical research using Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electromagnetic (EM) methods. Application deadline: April 1, 2016.
  • SSA travel grant Travel Grants are available for a limited number of students planning to present at the 2016 SSA annual meeting in Reno, NV. A CPP graduate student received an SSA travel grant in 2014.
    Submission deadline: November 30, 2015.
  • The Hollings Scholarship Program includes both a scholarship award for two years and a 10-week internship. Undergraduates in their second or third year are interested in oceanic and atmospheric sciences are eligible to apply. Deadline is January 29, 2016.
  • Scholarships for field study for undergraduates, the Yellowstone field trip could be a prime target! Deadline: February.

General STEM Scholarships:

  • Search engine for federal grants for graduate STEM students
  • NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program, this program supports graduate students who are pursuing research-based degrees in science and engineering. The GRFP provides 3 years of support for the education of individuals who have "demonstrated their potential for significant achievements". Application deadline: late October 26.
  • HENAAC Scholarships, STEM scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students with high GPAs, aimed towards Hispanic students. The application deadline every year is April 30.
